Beginner Questions

I’m interested in starting archery but don’t know where to start?

That’s fine. We were all in your position at some point. The best way to get started is to book a taster lesson with us. To book an hour-long taster lesson just get in touch using on the following:

Click here to send us an email

Or click here to send us a message via Facebook

Or you can phone us 01282 425967 during business hours.

If it’s outside business hours or a Sunday or a Monday, it’s best to either send us an email via the contact form or talk to us via Facebook messenger.

We usually answer all questions within 24 hrs.

Why should I buy from you?

Well, if you visit the physical shop, you’ll have the opportunity to test our archery equipment on a 10m and 25m indoor archery range.

We’re one of the only shops in the UK to have both a 10m and 25m range directly connected to our shop.

Both our ranges adjoin our shop. So, you only need to walk a few steps from our store and you’re on the range.

Because our range is indoors, you’ll be safe from the wind, rain and bad weather.

Also, we’ll be on hand to help and advise you every step of the way. We’ll make you get the best archery equipment for your level and budget.

We can tune your bow too. And we can help you find the correct arrows for your bow as well. This last point is important as you can’t just use any arrow with any bow.

We won’t just sell you the most whatever gear is the most profitable for us.

If we can find you cheaper archery equipment which does the same job as the more expensive stuff, we’ll tell you – that’s a promise. Many other archery companies don’t do this.

If you don’t believe this just check out our reviews and testimonials.

To us: you’re a fellow archer not just a customer.

Additionally, we have a reputation for running a shop with a very relaxed atmosphere. Everyone is welcome, even if you’ve never shot before. So why not pay us a visit, you have nothing to lose.

Why buy from us online

Well, our prices are competitive.

You will be supporting an independent family run archery shop.

And we’re an active NFAS member too. We sponsor various competitions and a few semi-pro archers as well.

If you buy from us, you’ll be helping us, helping the NFAS, and indirectly helping a few archery competitions the archers we sponsor too.

Why should I choose Phoenix Archery for lessons?

Well, I (Mark Duerden) have been shooting bows for over 25 years. I’ve won various competitions around the UK, including the regional championships and the Scottish champs (twice). And I still compete frequently to this day.

I also teach hundreds of new, novice and professional archers every year. That’s hundreds of hours every year spent training people to shoot a bow. When you teach this much you’ve seen everything.

Also, I run an archery shop and range. Our archery shop has new equipment constantly coming in. This means, unlike most archery clubs and ranges, we have the chance to test and try all the latest archery gear coming out.

And our archery club has many members who buy equipment from the shop. This allows me to get feedback on the new archery items I sell.

As you can see, I’m immersed in the world of archery.

Because I’ve been shooting for so long. Because I teach for so many hours per year. And because I have access to latest archery gear (and product feedback from my regulars) – I have an insight into the sport which many other clubs and teachers don’t have. It’s simply not possible because they don’t have the unique environment which my club has.

But wait it gets better…

Phoenix archery is one of the only full-sized indoor ranges (in the UK) with a fully stocked shop.

Learn archery with us and not only can shoot targets on our 10 meter starter range, but you can learn archery on our full-sized 25 meter range too. Having constant access to this big range is one of the reasons my club is so successful in archery competitions.

Many archery shops don’t even have a 10 meter range where you can try their stock.

Also, if you want to upgrade your equipment, you’ll only need to step next door and have a word with me or Graham.

Within minutes you could be shooting or testing a new bow. This means you can improve faster as you can always be shooting the latest equipment – sometimes within a matter of minutes.

You can also talk to me and my club regulars, about any of the archery gear we sell and use. You’ll be able to pick the combined brains of all the regulars who shoot at our club too. And there’s a lot of us, so that’s a lot of experience.

The result is you’ll have a better chance of finding the right equipment for you, your style, and your level of archery.

We also have a reputation for having one of the friendliest and warm atmospheres in the UK.

Everyone is welcome at our shop, even if you’ve never shot a bow before.

And we have long opening hours too. So, you can pop in at strange times (which suit you and your schedule).

There are very few places in the UK where you can do all this. Why not come a pay us a visit?

It won’t cost you anything.

Our advice and time are free. You have nothing to lose.

Why is it a bad idea to buy archery equipment from eBay?

The main reason: it’s dangerous.

I’ve seen sellers on eBay listing bows with the strings on backward.

I’ve seen sellers on eBay selling bow and arrow packages with the wrong types of arrows included. Did you know that if you use the wrong type of arrow with certain bows they can shatter? The shards could end up in your eyes making you go blind.

I’ve seen eBay archery retailers selling compound bows to people who’ve never shot a bow before. Have you ever seen a compound bow misfired – it’s not pretty? Compound bows can sometimes explode if misused.

I’ve even seen a compound bow misfire cut a man’s head open and knock a tooth out. They’re dangerous to use if you don’t know what you’re doing.

I’ve seen many more shenanigans on eBay. But these are the most dangerous ones I frequently see.

I cannot stress this next point enough…

If you’re new to archery go and get some lessons from a qualified. It doesn’t have to be us. But make sure you learn the basics from someone who knows what they’re talking about and qualified to teach.

Archery equipment was originally designed to kill people.

Archery gear has sharp points and edges. And equipment (like bows) work by utilising tremendous pressures and stresses. Because you’re combining piercing points and these big energies, you’re handling something which can be lethal. And I mean lethal for the operator.

You may end up saving a few pounds buying from eBay. But you’re juggling with knives – one slip and it’s all over.

Go and get some lessons before buying anything any archery equipment. It’s the smartest way to learn the sport – and the cheapest.

If you get archery lessons from us, you don’t even need a bow to start with. We will provide you with one for free.

Once you’ve done a few lessons with us or another competent teacher, we’ll be happy to find the right bow for you.

Follow the above advice and you’ll not only be off to the best start. But you’ll be learning this wonderful sport the safest way possible.

What are your archery shop opening times?

Opening times are:

Sun – CLOSED

Mon – CLOSED

Tues – 10 AM – 8 pm

Weds – 10 AM – 8 pm

Thurs – 10 AM – 8 pm

Friday – 10 AM – 5 pm

Sat – 10 AM – 5 pm

Both our archery shop and ranges are open at the above times.

What’s the best draw weight for a first-time archer?

There isn’t one. It depends on your size, strength, and your preferred archery style.

Personally, we like people to complete a series of lessons with us before buying anything.

Once you’ve done this, you’ll have a better idea of what you can and can’t shoot. You’ll then be in a far better position to find the right bow for you and your budget.

This is the best way to improve. And it’s the safest way to do it.

What’s the best type of bow for a first-time shooter?

The one you use at your first archery lesson.

Many people make the silly mistake of buying a bow before even trying a taster lesson.

We see a lot of people make this mistake. Many of them turn up our shop wanting a broken bow repaired, and some have even injured themselves because they don’t know how to shoot correctly. Others buy a bow which is simply to hard for them to shoot.

There isn’t the best bow for new shooters. You don’t need the best equipment when you’re starting out. You simply need some lessons.

Get yourself a beginner’s archery course from us, or from another club. By the end any beginner’s archery course, you’ll have a better idea of the type of bow you want to shoot. Also be sure to check out our beginners guide to archery.

What are the best arrows for my bow?

If you’ve never done archery before, none of them. Go and get some lessons before you buy anything. If you match the wrong arrow up with the wrong bow it’s dangerous. The arrows can shatter and explode.

We can build you a set of arrows for your bow. You can also buy ready made arrows from our shop.

And, during our 6-week beginner archery course, we show you how to make your own arrows.

But you only need to do this once you’ve bought your first bow. And you don’t need to buy your first bow till you’ve finished a beginner’s course somewhere.

Are you just an online shop or do you have a physical location?

We’re both. We sell archery equipment online and run a physical shop, club, and range.

You can find our location by clicking here.

I’d like to add that our prices are the same in the shop as they are online.

So, don’t be worried about visiting our store and paying more. You’ll be charged the same price.

In fact, if you visit our physical shop, and you buy a big set of items from us we may be able to offer you a discount. This is something we can’t do if you buy online.

Can I just turn up at your physical shop?

Yes, if it’s during opening our hours.

We have a reputation for being one of the warmest and friendly archery shops in the UK.

You can visit us even if you’ve never picked up a bow before.

You’ve provided me with a great service how can I help you back?

Thank you, you are a star. Reviews really help a small business like us. They’re essential to our survival.

You can leave us a review 3 ways. If you want to do us massive favour you could leave us a review on all 3:-)

It’ll take you no more than 2 mins

Can I try your archery equipment on your range before I buy?

Online Order Questions

Why do left handed bows take longer to ship?

Because most are made to order. So, when ordering a lefty please be patient.

Every bow shop has this problem in the world. You cannot stock every bow there is. And you certainly can’t stock left and right versions every bow type, weight, size, and pull. It’s just not possible.

Occasionally we do have a few lefties in stock. But most will be special order. Just want more info, or would like to see how this affects you, get in touch.

Do I get any kind of warranty when buying from you?

Yes, you can find our warranty on this page.

Can you ship internationally?

Sure thing. When you’re checking out via our online archery shop, you’ll have the option of selecting your country during check out.

If you need a tracking number or please get in touch.

We can place your order over the phone or skype if you want to customise the postage to suit your needs and location.

I want to leave some additional info with my order how can I do that?

Simple. During the last bit of the checkout process, the page will ask you if you want to leave us a note. Just enter whatever you want us to know in there.

I need to return something

No probs. Just read this page first and then contact us.

You must cover postage costs though

How long will it take to ship my order?

If it’s in stock, we may ship your order the same day (if it’s a working day).

Most orders will be dispatched within 3 working days. Usually sooner.

We can’t stock every bow combination there is. It’s just not physically possible. Even the biggest archery shops in the world have this problem. In these cases, the bows or parts will be sourced from the manufacturer. Meaning, it may take a little longer for you to receive your goods.

Why does it take so long for compounds bows to be delivered?

Most are ordered directly from the manufacturer. It’s impossible to stock every type of compound size, shape and weight. Every UK archery retailer has this problem, not just us.

Also, most compounds are built in the USA. This means they’ll have to go through UK customs – which can delay things.

If you order a compound bow from us, we will inspect it and check it when it arrives at our shop and fix any problems if we find them.

That way, when your new compound arrives at your door (or you pick up from us), it’ll be ready to shoot.

Can I get some extra bits fitted when I order a compound from you?

Sure, just get in touch about your requirements. Or leave us a note during the end of checkout.

I run/work an archery club/lessons/business. Can I bulk order archery equipment from you?

Yes. Just get in touch with us. We can offer a good discount on bulk order and repeat orders.

Also, as we’re immersed in the latest and greatest archery gear, we can often advise and help you too.

We can sometimes find you cheaper alternatives or better-quality items that you might not be aware of.

I want to bulk buy some targets from you for my archery shoot/club. How do I do this?

Get in touch. We’re happy to discuss bulk orders and sort out a possible discount.

We might also be able to save you a little cash by recommending you cheaper alternatives to more well-known archery products and brands.

Archery equipment is changing all the time. Because we run a shop, we’re often aware of these new developments.

I’ve found a problem with your site. How can I tell you about it?

Please use this form to contact. Please give us as many details about the problem as possible. We’ll try to get our website admin to fix the problem out ASAP.

I don’t have PayPal can I pay by debit or credit card?

Yes, you can.

When you come to the payment options at the end of checkout, you can select Stripe as your payment option.

You’ll then be able to pay with any debit or credit card you use.

Do I have to use the contact form to get in touch? Why can’t I just email you?

We don’t put our email in plain text on our website because it’ll get harvested by the spambots which roam the internet.

We used to have our email in plain text, but our inbox ended up flooded with spam. We got so much we ended up missing important emails.

So now we use a contact form.

I know some people don’t like them, but they work.

But rest assured we will receive any message you send through it. And we’ll reply to your messages within 24 hrs.

Aside from this, you can also phone us 01282 425967. Or you can get in touch with us via Facebook messenger.

4 is about the maximum we like for personal lessons. Any more people than this and the quality of the lesson we can provide tends to suffer.
